Anti-Phishing
Fighting
Phishing is easy
In order to combat phishing we must train individuals how to
spot attempts at phishing and how to respond to them. Avoiding phishing
attempts is as easy as modifying your browsing habits. One easy lesson to learn
is to always contact the company from which the email “supposedly” comes from,
this safety measure allows you to know if this email is real or fake. I will
always repeat that the most sensible thing to do is to type the genuine website
you know directly and manually into the address bar instead of clicking the
links in emails. Almost all legitimate companies address users by
their usernames when sending emails, as opposed to the generic "Dear
eBay customer" for example, which a phisher would most likely send
since they usually don’t have that type of information about a customer.
If we pay more attention to
the emails we get, it’s almost certain that scammers would have to find another
line of work, but unaware users (or those who don’t take the threat of phishing
serious) continue to provide more motive to scammers since the more victims
they get the more inspiring the ordeal. The hope is that this will stop soon
and users will take this threat very seriously.
Anti-Phishing groups predict that the
technique of phishing will soon be useless as more people are becoming aware
and taking action, therefore scammers will use other techniques to steal
information such as pharming and malware.
