across these terms
sooner or later, but hopefully, you know them not only when you become
a victim of scams, but instead learn about what these terms mean before
you get scamed. Here are a few terms every internet user should be
aware of:
Phishing:
Phishing
is the
fraudulent process of attempting to acquire personaly data such as
passwords,
usernames,
and credit card details, by pretending to be a trustworthy entity in an
electronic communication. Scammers spoof themselves by pretending to be
from PayPal, eBay, e-business sites or online banks to lure
unsuspecting victims. Phishing is primarily carried out by e-mail or
instant messaging, it usually directs users to enter
details
into
a website, this website is in fact the scammer's duplicate website of a
trusted entity.
Back-door
Trojan:
These are programs that create secret openings on a user's computer to
remotely access victim's files without the user knowing.
Bot:
Is a short
term to describe a computer program which performs asks automatically.
They are mostly used maliciously to scan for personal data such as
passwords, a users' browsing history, capture keystrokes from a
keyboard, send spam and report information to a third party across the
Internet.
Botnet:
a controlled, remote, third party network compromised robot computers.
Malware:
a general term for malicious software. Examples of these include
spyware and worms, viruses, Trojan horses, .
IM:
instant
messenger, while friendly for chatting with friends, it is used by
hackers to send pictures or other files and links with hidden viruses.
Image spam:
a spam e-mail whose content contains text embedded inside an image.
Smishing:
A kind
of phishing which sends SMS messages to cell phones and tries to lure
smart phone users to a Web site, where they download malware without
knowing it.
Spim:
This is spamming over instant messaging systems.
Spit:
This is spamming over internet telephony, or VoIP spam.
Trojan
(horse):
a highly malicious program that can appear to be legitimate
or
harmless to unsuspecting computer users so that they will run the
program which then gives hackers backdoor access to users computer.
Virus:
a
malicious program capable of copying itself and attaching to other
programs. To function, someone must run the program to which the virus
is attached.
Vishing:
or
"voice phishing". In this scam, consumers receive a phone
call or an e-mail telling them to call a phone number about a
problem on a bank or credit card account. When victims make the call,
they hear an automated message asking them to verify account
information and other sensitive data. Keystrokes get recorded as
victims enter in their account details. By using Voice over Internet
Protocol phones, scammers can choose the area code and prefix of the
telephone numbers used so that they closely resemble the real company's
phone numbers.
Worms:
a virus is a dangerous program which is capable of copying itself
without needing a host program.
